One month has passed since we began this semester. These freshmen have already adjusted themselves to my way of teaching. Yesterday, we held a meeting to discuss which teaching method the students like most.
We all have preparation activities for students in each unit, in which the oral practice is the focus. The difference between my activitis and theirs is that their activities concern mainly acting while mine thinking. Sometime I may regret not giving my students enough opportunity to show their performing ability. But our dene said that acting and fun only were not enough, as they were childish. Maybe that is also what I have thought when I was preparing my lessons previously. However, it seems to work according to my colleagus.
The point is: will envolving in acting arouse students' interest in learning English? A lot of teachers, and students as well, will certainly say "yes". But according to my teaching experience, it's not necessarily so. In the first year of my teaching, I found that they felt very excited when performing, but forgot all about English study after class. And, as our dene said, because those activities were a bit "childish", they only got fun from them, but not a critical thinking, which is quite important to a university student.
My way out is to balance the activities of thinking in both oral practice and in-class reading practice. I've added some critical thinking about culture, social phenomenon, interpersonal communication, etc. to my class, and the reading practice consists not only language points.
I'm not yet quite sure about this method; after all, my teaching is actually just at the very beginning. Now I'm in my third year in teaching career (if I can call it a career). I teach freshmen again this semester. Looking back on the past two years teaching my former students, I know some of my problems in teaching. I've tried to correct them and improve my teaching. I still feel so nervous.
Anyhow, I'm on my way, searching.
